Like with any trial in life, mental health becomes the star of the show. When life is drastically changed or put on pause, you will become depressed. Through all the medical appointments begging for help, the drugs given to combat the numerous symptoms, and simply the complexity of changes in your life, depression with endometriosis is common. It is also very common to have anxiety. Even if you’re at the start of your diagnostic journey for endometriosis, you can feel a lot of anxiety for what is to come. These are also very normal things to struggle with. Anyone would!
While the numbers are unclear, there is a high risk for suicide with endometriosis. Your life can often become permanently altered. Friends will disappear into their own life, and you will miss out on dreams you had originally planned. We may not get answers to our questions in this disease. There is still so much that is unknown about endometriosis. If you’re struggling, I highly suggest that you seek help with a therapist. It is easy to feel like a burden, constantly needing help with mundane tasks. You worry that your friends, family, and significant other will burn out from you. Having a weekly therapy session can help. You can vent, learn coping skills, and just have someone to talk to about it all without worrying you’re saying too much or hurting someone’s feelings.
If you’re struggling with suicide, seek help immediately! It is NEVER too late to ask for help. Go to the emergency room, call a crisis line, friend, or family. If talking is too hard for you, text someone! Even crisis lines have the option of using a chat room or texting through your phone number. If you’ve dealt with any amount of endometriosis pain, you are already strong enough. The physical pain may not change – I know for me it hasn’t - but the rest of your life can get better. You can gain more support. You can and will learn to find the aspects of life that you can still enjoy, and you can hold onto that. You will adapt to a new life. It’s not going to be what you originally planned, but you can find happiness again, even in the suffering.
